The heroine is a woman named Mira, and the plot is simply a study of how she feels about herself (or really, about being female) during childhood, a conventional marriage, a sudden divorce and eventual independence. "The Women's Room" is a good place to begin. Something about the lives of certain women in midcentury America. Pretend you're from Mars, you haven't heard a word, and you want to know It's not, after all, Marilyn French's fault that others before her have gone on and on about the same subject.
